Organizer: OWI is a non-profit 501 © (3) organization that has been working on development projects with the community of Kiminini, Kenya, since 2004 with the goal of giving a ‘leg-up and not a hand-out’. OWI projects include clean water wells, annual mobile medical clinics, conferences and seminars, cyber café and a community run orphan program with 100 orphans in family care.
Thanks to the grant funding, OWI has acquired a plot of land and building has started. This Kili climb is a fundraiser with a goal to raise $80,000 toward the following building projects!
The raised funds will go 100% toward the following building projects in Kiminini, Kenya:
1) Build a multipurpose Event Center
2) Finish the office block for staff (social workers, office staff and supervisor)
3) Build a Library/Resource room
4) Build a Medical Clinic
Trip land cost: From $2950 includes room and board as stated in the ITINERARY based on double occupancy (single room extra), all scheduled land transportation, climbing company services, two-nights at safari lodge and three days R&R at a beach resort in Mombasa.
International air (economy class) from California runs currently from $900 – $1200 depending on time of reservation and routing. Please note that reserving the flight early saves you money. Please also note that we can arrange the lowest possible fare for you from anywhere in the U.S. in any fare class.
An optional Trip Extension to our project area in Kiminini, Kenya, is offered after the Climb and Mombasa R&R for 6 more days. This allows us to visit our Kenyan partners and orphans, and to see first hand what the donated funds have accomplished and what is yet to be done. We will do some volunteer work as well. The cost of this extension is $650 and includes room (shared), board and transportation.
We will have information about preparing for the climb and trip itself, incl. arranging the visas and proper vaccinations. You are welcome to join our scheduled practice hikes and info meetings. And as always, please feel to contact us at any time.
Fundraiser: In addition to the trip cost, we encourage each person to seek support with a goal of $5000 pp toward the Orphans Building Project with a minimum contribution of $500. Don’t be scared, though, we’ll discuss various ways to raise money in our future meetings not forgetting matching funds that many companies offer toward charitable causes. Please know that all funds paid to OWI are tax-deductible.
Trip deposit is $300 to secure a spot on the climbing team. The deposit is non-refundable. We recommend reserving the flights as early as possible for the best fare (contact us). The final balance for the land cost is due by December 30, 2013.
Refunds: The deposit is non-refundable. 50% of the paid land cost is refundable until January 1, 2014, after which there are no refunds. We recommend purchasing Travel Insurance that has a cancellation benefit to cover the non-refundable expenses in case an unforeseen cancellation. We can assist you in obtaining appropriate insurance.
